Do I Need an Emergency Dentist?
A dental emergency often occurs when trauma or injury to the mouth takes place, such as an impact to the mouth that has caused a tooth to fall out. However, dental emergencies can take other forms as well, such as a dental crown falling off or an infection in a tooth. While some dental emergencies may not seem like they require immediate care, how quickly you receive care will determine whether a tooth can be saved or not.
In addition to how quickly you receive care, how you respond during the emergency will also play a role in the outcome of the situation. By responding to specific dental emergencies correctly and heading to our office right away, there is an increased likeliness we can restore the health and function of your tooth.
What are Common Dental Emergencies?
Dental emergencies can take several forms. However, there are specific injuries that commonly occur, which include:
- Knocked Out Tooth—If a tooth has been knocked out, hold the tooth by the crown and rinse it with water. Do not use cleaners and do not dry the tooth. If you can, reinsert the tooth back into the socket. If that does not work, place the tooth in a cup of milk and head to our office.
- Dislodged Tooth—For a dislodged tooth, try to push the tooth back into its correct position, but be careful not to force it. If you are successful, lightly bite on a piece of gauze to hold the tooth in place and come to our office.
- Broken Tooth—If a tooth has become broken or cracked, rinse your mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the face to reduce pain and swelling while you contact our office immediately.
- Dental Abscess—A dental abscess is an infection that is very painful. If left untreated, the infection can spread to additional teeth and into the bloodstream. Call our office right away if you suspect you have an infected tooth.
